Session #3: Our Three Possible States of Being, While We Are In the Sanctifying Process;
From Living in Egypt … to Living in the Wilderness … to Living in Canaan
Israel’s Walk with God
Christ’s sanctification or separation of our 3-part being, body, soul and spirit, may be seen in type, by the happenings of Israel’s walk with God, as they went from...
o
“Out of” Egypt – the world - separated Pharaoh’s rule (Satan)§
All regenerated Christians have left Egypt objectively (factually)o
Into, but not through, the Wilderness – Living by Their soul, Never Trusting God§
Murmuring cries of the self-soul, I think, I feel and what I want.§
The soul wanders in the Wilderness, never satisfied, never having rest and peace§
Most Christians still live (dwell) here most of the time.
o
Into the Land of Canaan – Our spirit – Living by Christ’s Indwelling Spirit of Life§
1st generation of Israel, as our fallen soul, unrenewed, died in unbelief§
Next generation crossed the Jordan, they Entered the Land (Christ Himself)§
Then By Faith, they Enter into The Land. Christ is our dwelling place, finding Rest.§
God ordained this Rest for those who believe, since before the world began (Heb 4:3).Dwelling in Egypt – The World
Israel’s position and condition in Egypt represents that of all the called, but before regeneration, deliverance, salvation, and their sanctification “in Christ.”
o
Abraham’s lineage, are as all the called, awaiting God’s intervention.o
Suffering 400 years of bitter bondage to the tyrannical rule of Pharaoh, being hopeless and helpless is the state of humankind, apart from God’s intervention.o
Bound to Pharaoh’s (Satan's) taskmasters (Sin indwelling our body, called the “flesh”).Romans 7:5 For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death.
Thus, Israel was Dead to God, spiritually destitute, hopeless and helpless.
God Provided a Deliverer for Israel; Moses was a Type of Jesus Christ. Like Jesus
·
Moses gave up his position in the Royal Household … for his people - He became a shepherd·
He was rejected by his own people (Acts 7:25), as Jesus who “His own receive him not”·
Moses as anti-type, gave The Law on stone – Christ gives us the law of His life in our heart·
Moses Raised up to Deliver Israel - Moses also was a mediator between God and men (Psa. 106:23)Exodus 12:13-14
(God told Moses) And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. 14And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.John 1:29 … Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
1 Cor. 5:7b …. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
·
Israel did not keep this memorial, (except once in the wilderness) because the feast items they needed are only then available in Canaan. They wasted 40 years.·
They did NOT Enter Into Canaan due to Unbelief.
God One Require Work was to Believe. (trust in, cling to and rely upon)
John 6:29
Jesus answered…,This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.Israel Left Egypt as Being “Dead To Egypt” (The World)
Gal 6:14
the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.Pharaoh (A Type of Satan’s Sin Nature) Was Cut-off, Made Powerless Over the Israelites
Exo 15:4
Pharaoh's chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains …drowned in the Red sea.Pharaoh Didn’t Die - Israel was out of Pharaoh’s Reach – They were “as dead” to Pharaoh
Romans 6:11
consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. (NASB)Christians are “Dead TO Sin,” Making Sin in their Flesh of No Effect
Rom 6:6-7
… our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed (kartargeo, “made of no effect”), that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Sin’s Location - Still In Our Flesh Body (You cannot cast out the flesh)
Yet, A Long Battle Ensues, Sin in the flesh Tries To Keep us Bound To Egypt.
Formerly
- Ephes. 2:2-3 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.Presently
- Gal 5:17. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.Romans 7:17-23 So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which indwells me.
18For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the wishing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19For the good that I wish, I do not do; but I practice the very evil that I do not wish. 20But if I am doing the very thing I do not wish, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 21I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wishes to do good. 22For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner(soul) man, 23but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind, and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.( NASB)Galatians 5:16-17 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh
Galatians 5:25 If we live
(Since we have life) in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Our Toothless Flesh – Is Empowered by the Religious Law
1 Cor. 15:56b
… the strength (dunamis, power) of sin is the law.Romans 7:8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
Romans 7:11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.
Religions Liars Teach LAW – Don’t Believe It – Turn from The Law
John 8:44
Ye (Pharisees) are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it (father of the lie).Mark 7:7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
Titus 1:14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.
1 Tim. 1:7 (Some, contrary to Paul’s teaching) Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
2 Cor. 3:15-18 But even unto this day, when Moses (The Law) is read, the vail (flesh) is upon their heart. (mind)
16Nevertheless when it (The heart/mind) shall turn to the Lord, the vail (flesh) shall be taken away. 17Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is (in our human spirit), there is liberty (freedom). 18but (Being turned) we all, with open face beholding as in a glass (mirror) the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
The Wilderness – Not A Place to Dwelling - The Independent Soul
·
Israel was to walk, trusting God, into Canaan via the Wilderness.·
Moses, as Christ, was with them. (We have Christ in us)·
God’s presence was with them, in the daily manna, water from a rock, cloud by day and pillar of fire by night.1 Cor. 10:1-6
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 4And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. 5But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. (Examples of what Not to do)
Yet Fleshly, They Continually Murmured and Rebelled Against Moses & God
(Man’s Independent Soul-self, as a Self-god, is the Problem – never trusting God)
all the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron; and the whole congregation said to them, "Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!Num 14:2
Mark 7:20-23 … "That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man.
21"For from within, out of the heart (soul) of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, 22deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. "23”All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man."Romans 8:6a For to be carnally minded is death; … Rom 8:7 the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
“Entering In” – To Dwell In Canaan
·
They had Left Egypt, but Did NOT Enter In – They died in unbelief.·
12 stones (For all Israel’s Tribes) were buried in the Jordan … Representing a death to the Independent-Self of the Soul … to Trust God.·
The Direct Supernatural Supply of God Ended – The Manna Ceasedo
In Canaan God’s Indirect Supply Worked through them as they Co-operated.
We learn to Co-operate with Christ in us – to obeying His “Inner Speaking” – NOT Law
Romans 8:14
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons (grown children) of God.
Living In Canaan - Under a New Paradigm of “Faith & Co-operation”
1. We Have No Condemnation
Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (NASB)Romans 8:2 the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
Romans 8:3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,
2. We Live By Grace
Romans 6:14b
… for ye are not under the law, but under grace.Romans 11:6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
Romans 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Col. 2:14, 20 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 20Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
3. We Maintain a New Mindset – Believing & Trusting
Romans 8:5-6
For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, (NASB)
Ephes. 4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
We Distrust Our Independent-Self
2 Cor. 1:8-9
For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: 9But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:4. We are Free From the Law
2 Cor. 3:15-18
But even unto this day, when Moses (The Law) is read, the vail is upon their heart. (mind) 16Nevertheless when it (The mind) shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.
Galatians 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
5. We Know Nothing Can Harm Us – It’s all working “for our good”
John 16:33
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.Romans 8:28-29 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
2 Cor. 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
Col. 2:9-10 For in him (Christ) dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
6. We Trust God is at Work – to Complete Us In Experience, as Well as Fact
Philip. 1:6
… he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:Philip. 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
7. We Enjoy the Fruit of the Land of Canaan
Galatians 5:22
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Yet, in the Land There Were Giants (The Flesh), As was Amalek (The Flesh) in the Wilderness
(We are never free of the flesh so long as we live on earth in these bodies of sin.)
Deut. 25:17-19
Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way, when ye were come forth out of Egypt; 18How he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, even all that were feeble behind thee, when thou wast faint and weary; and he feared not God. 19Therefore it shall be, when the Lord thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven (God will forget Amalek); thou shalt not forget it (We will not).Saul (Our Self-strength as King) Will Not Kill Amalek
1 Samuel 15:8-9
And he (Saul) took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. 9But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them…1 Samuel 15:20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and have gone the way which the Lord sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. <<<Not God’s Instruction
1 Samuel 15:32-33 Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.
33And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal. Our Victory Is By the Indwelling Spirit – Killing the Deeds of the Flesh
Romans 8:13
For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
Walking by Trusting, Subject to the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus in Us
Consider the Victory of Faith – By Trusting God Enough to Obey Him.
When They Obeyed God’s seemingly foolish instruction At Jericho and the walls came down.
Romans 8:2
For the law (normal operation) of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.Galatians 5:16-17 … Walk in (walk subject to) the Spirit (Canaan), and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye (in your self) cannot do the things that ye would.Gal 5:25 If we live in (Since we have life in) the Spirit (Canaan), let us also walk in the Spirit (Canaan).
The Victory, All the Time, Had been Israel’s … if they had only Trusted the Lord
Joshua 2:9-11
(Rahab) said unto the men (Joshua’s spies), I know that the Lord hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you. 10for we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. 11and as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the Lord your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
“The Man with the Sword” is there for us
Joshua 5:13-14
Now it came about when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand, and Joshua went to him and said to him, "Are you for us or for our adversaries?" 14he said, "No, rather I indeed come now as captain of the host of the Lord." Joshua ... said to him, "What has my lord to say to his servant?" (NASB)Heb 4:12 the word of God
(Jesus Christ) is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. <END>
